Hi,
For French Paper 4 (0520) For the 12 marks in Other linguistic Features for question 3 if you use a gerondif correctly will it still be credited. It is not in the mark scheme of what should be considered. I also used the basic tenses and vocabulary and linguistic features that the mark scheme requires. So will I not be credited for gerondif in the OLF? (other linguistic features). Please reply as soon as possible
Hello,
Upon checking the Examiner Report, the use of gerondif was not specifically mentioned. The published table of grade descriptors highlights the range of language structures expected. The strongest candidates will be able to demonstrate among other things, varied sentence patterns using subordinate clauses such as quand, si, parce que, car, qui, que, object pronouns, linking words/conjunctions (e.g. donc, cependant), strong negatives (e.g. ne? jamais, ne… plus), comparative/ superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs, prepositions such as depuis, pendant, pour, and be familiar with some less common vocabulary, pertinent to the subject matter. It is important for all candidates to show control of basic structures, including correct spelling, gender, adjectival agreement, possessive adjectives, expressions of quantity, common prepositions. Without this they will not access the top most bands.
You may download the Examiner Report here: https://igcsecentre.com/cambridge-igcse-past-exam-papers/
Alternatively, you may contact the exam board, CIE (https://www.cie.org.uk), and ask them this question. Only the exam board could give you the confirmation on the mark scheme.
You just stated that the candidates in order to access top marks will be able to use less familiar vocabulary which is relevant to the subject matter. Gerondif was relevant in my case and it was used correctly. Also, it was less familiar vocabulary as it is not very commonly seen in IGCSE French Essay (0520) P4 Question 3. So do you think I can still be credited? Yes or no? Please reply as soon as possible. Also, I did use most of the linguistic features you mentioned were necessary to access top marks. But, I used gerondif as well. How is it possible that gerondif won’t be credited? Though, not a mandatory requirement it is less familiar and was relevant and correctly applied in my essay. It is classified as less familiar vocabulary which can be used and will be credited like you stated to get top marks. So will the examiner ignore it and disregard it or will it be credited because it was used correctly, was less familiar vocabulary and was relevant? Please reply as soon as possible. Thanks
Hi Harsh,
This is up to the examiner?s discretion. The grading descriptors are intended for the examiners to arrive at an appropriate mark. They usually adapt ?best fit approach? wherein they select the set of descriptors provided in the mark scheme that most closely describes the quality of the work being marked. For example, a candidate uses a variety of relevant vocabulary but has varied success with more complex structures. In such cases, the given mark must take into account both the strengths and weaknesses of the piece of work.
If you think you?ve done most of the linguistic features and even beyond what is expected to earn the top marks, then you don?t have to worry. At the end of the day, your good French skills is something you can carry on moving forward and no grades or marks could change that.
Lastly, as we have stated on our last reply, you may contact the exam board, CIE, and ask them this question. Only the exam board could give you the confirmation on the mark scheme.
Hi IGCSE Centre,
When will you guys get a hold of 2018 Feb March Papers for French as a Foreign Language (0520)? It seems as if that is the only subject where 2018 Feb March Papers are still missing and it’s been almost a month since all the Feb March 2018 Papers of all the other subjects was released? Also, how can I contact CIE?
Hi,
Unfortunately, we still have some subjects missing. But we will upload it once we get ahold of it.
You may contact CIE through their website: https://www.cie.org.uk
Was the format for the news report that I had originally used Headline, Who?,What?,When?,Where?,Why?,How?, Background, Prediction and Conclusion correct?
Hi,
For the full marks for Writing you need to show that you have structured your answer, sequenced your ideas, and used a wide range of original and appropriate language. You can decide on your own structure for your answer, but what matters is that there should be a structure of some kind which is clear to your reader.
Hey IGCSE Centre,
Could you please tell me for a newspaper report what is the format you have to follow for First Language English (0500) and are you expected to come up with your own headline? For my Paper 2 I used a headline, background WHO?,WHAT?,WHEN?,WHERE?,WHY? AND HOW?) , conclusion and prediction. Is that correct? Please reply ASAP. This is crucial. Also please respond to my latest question regarding Physics Paper 6 (0625)
Hi Harsh,
There should always be a headline needed and it would be given in the question. Please follow the headline needed in the question. You should not simply copy the same headline from the reading passage ? you would lose marks if you do so.
With regards to the format, it is not necessary to draw columns or pictures to depict a real newspaper report. Your paragraphs must contain all the bullet points that are requested in the question.
When will the May June 2018 papers be uploaded please?
Hi,
We do not have a fixed date to upload the papers. We upload the past exam papers as soon as we get ahold of them ? can be anytime after the results are released. You may need to check our website from time to time.
