Hello Aryan,
First, relax. Make sure you?re well rested before you sit for an examination.
Then, do targeted revision. Revise on the most common mistakes you always seem to make. Read and annotate your textbook for the questions you got wrong. This is because you won?t have much time to go through the whole textbook. Then, re-do those questions you got wrong.
You people are my only hope now. Could you please help me in some areas of English (0500) core (paper 1) especially section 1 (explaining meaning of phrases, writer’s effect and also how to develop ideas for directed writing) in addition I need some help to write answers in my own words(where I struggle the most). Please reply fast because I desperately need help.
Hello Divya,
In explaining the meaning of phrases, you will need to be sensitive to the atmosphere being created and show appreciation of the feelings of any characters in your response. This means watching out for details and picking up on clues in the passage as you read. In this question, you are going to be rewarded not only for identifying relevant material in the passage but also for development of those ideas and use of supporting detail. Some ideas might be quite subtle
and implied.
For Writer?s Effect segment, you must build your ability to spot the required phrases or words. You need to give a full range of explained effects and link them into an overview which shows understanding of what the writer was trying to achieve in the passage as a whole. Try to avoid generalised comments such as ?The writer makes me feel as though I am there? and ?The passage is cleverly written?. These will gain no marks and give the impression that you are failing to find things to say. You need to explain HOW this is the case.
With regards to directed writing, the recommended structure for the response will be offered in the wording of the question, and you should follow this. There will be at least two factors to focus on ? for example advantages and disadvantages. You will need to make two lists before you start in order to make sure you have enough material for both sides of the question. The third element of this question is evaluation; you will have to decide which of the options is better, present reasons why you have formed this opinion and justify it. Though you cannot make up things which are not in the passages, you should try to use your own ideas in the way that you extend those of the passages, provided that they are ?based on the reading material?. You should try to use as many ideas from the passage as possible as they will all be relevant, but you will have to change the way you express them; all the material you use from the passage must be modified to suit the new genre. The ending needs to be definite and provide an effective and satisfying conclusion to the piece.
Lastly, we suggest that you build up your vocabulary. The quickest way to build vocabulary is, look for synonym for each basic words that you come across. Make a habit to keep a log book beside you, or use your smartphone if you have one, and start building your vocabulary by looking into a dictionary (or dictionary from your super smartphone) then copy down their synonym words or phrases. You can start by building verbs, as they are very interesting and you even get to learn phrasal verbs at the same time. The ability to use phrasal verbs in your writing, could land you some good marks! Furthermore, it is important that the replaced word must convey the essence of the point.

Hi IGCSE Center team!
Do you have any suggestions as to how can I improve my grades in IGCSE Business Studies (0450)? I’ll be writing my IGs this year and I really want to achieve A* in this subject as it would mean a lot to me. Thanks !
Hello Faizan,
Start as early as possible. You can revise the subjects from the beginning. Highlight the important facts that you think could be on the test (you should refer to the latest syllabus on what is expected during exams here: https://igcsecentre.com/cambridge-igcse-subjects-syllabuses/). You can then use the past exam papers (https://igcsecentre.com/cambridge-igcse-past-exam-papers/) as your revision. Start with the latest papers as they have the newest syllabus format and continue with the older ones date back from 5 to 10 years. Then, revise on the most common mistakes that you always seem to make. Pay attention to the most common mistakes you always seem to make. Make notes and revise them, so you can avoid making the same mistakes in your actual exam.
Here are some tips for you:
Demonstrate the application of knowledge and concepts using the given scenario. This doesn?t mean simply referencing the business name. Analyse the issues faced and make suitable recommendations as to what this particular business should do. Always use the information provided in the case study or question stem as a guide in considering what to write.
Thanks a lot!
One of my other common issues is that I’m almost always, unable to fully complete the paper in the time allotted. I keep wondering whether it’s just down to my handwriting or something else. Is there anything I can do about this?
Hello Faizan,
Pay attention to the number of marks available, which will provide you with a guide to how much you should write in you answer.
